The CLEVE ATKIN School of Horsemanship

If your group or family experiences in the past have been boring and dull, why not add some adventure to your next outing. At Rocky A Ranch we like horses. We now have the horses and equipment necessary to put up to 10 horses under saddle. We like teaching a group (up to 10 people) the basics of riding. We have hosted family reunions, scout troops, foreign exchange students, or just groups of friends who want a new thrill in life. We need a full day for the magic to occur. You will never experience the thrill of riding in a short session on an old nag. Our horses are broke, but still alive. That means that when you have the confidence to ride you will feel an adrenaline rush that only comes from cooperation between the rider and animal as you use your horse to chase calves wandering from the herd or engage in some friendly competition with the others in your group. If you don't live for the adrenaline rush, you will find a new form of relaxation as you let your horse take you on a leisurely walk up a mountain trail.
"Give your kid a superiority complex"
We start you out slowly. We put you in the round pen where the horse can't "get away" with anything. There you learn the basic signals to give your horse. You will learn that horse "language" is quite simple. Once you learn the signal for go, stop, turn, speed up and slow down you are equiped to begin enjoying a confident riding experience. But a horse is not a machine. You push on the brake pedal in your car and it reacts each time the same way. A horse is a living animal. When you push a horse's "brake" he might be distracted, or he might be confused because you are accidently signalling him to go at the same time. In the round pen you learn to communicate with your horse in clear signals that gives you confidence that you can control the horse and gives the horse confidence that it can trust you as a safe guide.
It is thrilling to see the transformation that takes place in children who at the beginning are afraid to get on the horse, and then, after a day with our training have to be pulled off the horse when it is time to go home.

Take a break from following your dreams.

Just put them on hold and hook up with them later.

Your experience at Rocky A Ranch will expose you to the basics of horsemanship. Learn to shoe a horse properly, work cattle from horseback, train your mount as you work, or just enjoy a mountain ride. When a certain part of your anatomy gets tired, you can enjoy a wagon ride behind one of our teams with your whole family. We end the day with a real cowboy grub dinner.

Fishing and camping on the mountain property can be arranged.
